Fall Week 2 General Meeting

Hey Bruins,

I hope everyone made it through week 1!

This week we will be having our first guest speaker of the year, Aram Namavar. Aram is a former president and advisor of PPA  and a current 4th-year medical student entering into internal medicine. He will be speaking about his medical journey in addition to giving us any tips/advice that he can! So with that being said, come with any questions that you may have for him or anything about the pre-med journey!!!

This week’s meeting will be in a different room and time. We will still have the meeting on Thursday however, the new meeting time is 6-6:50 pm and it will be taking place at CHS 13-105.

If you do not know where this is located, meet us in front of Young Hall by the steps at 5:40 pm.

We hope to see everyone there to take advantage of this great opportunity to learn from someone who was once a part of PPA!!

Fall Week 1 General Meeting

Hello Bruins!!

Welcome back, we hope you all had a great summer!!

We are so excited to see everyone again, as well as to meet everyone who is new.
We have many exciting meetings and opportunities for everyone this year!!

1. Care Extenders: As a volunteer, you are placed behind-the-scenes of the Ronald Reagan Medical Center and/or the Santa Monica Hospital, in which you have the opportunity to shadow doctors, nurses, and care partners, as well as observe medical procedures ranging from general caretaking to IV line management to even live births or surgeries! If you’re interested, please visit uclahealth.org/careextender for more information and to sign-up for the next upcoming rotation.

2. Emergency Medicine Reseach Associates offers you with on-going clinical research at UCLA’s Ronald Reagan Medical Center. With studies spanning emergency medicine, trauma/surgery, and medical/critical care, their program offers exposure to a multitude of specialties and allows members to better understand the role of research in medicine. Spring Week 9 General Meeting

Hey everyone!

This year we will be having no more meetings. *sad face*

We hope that everyone enjoyed all the meetings, speakers, and opportunities that we provided! Next year we hope to continue to bring lots of more exciting things for you guys!

We will send updates on the meetings for next year right before the start of Fall quarter so be on the lookout for that.

Spring Week 8 General Meeting

Hey Bruins!!

Happy week 8 !

To relieve some stress this week, we have decided to have a social at Yogurtland!

It will take place this Thursday and we will be meeting at the Bruin bear at 5 pm.
Come out and get to know some other people in PPA and enjoy a little break from studying!

Spring Week 7 General Meeting

Hey Bruins!

Happy week 7!!

This week we will be having another speaker, Dr. Shefizadeh! He is a former president of PPA and he is also a former UCLA medical student and has been part of the admissions committee!
He will be giving a presentation on some tips and tricks about getting into medical school. But don’t hesitate to come with questions for Dr. Shefizadeh!

In addition, Dr. Shefizadeh started TEB Academy, a place where he and other working healthcare executives, physicians, and scientists work with students to help them get into medical, dental, and pharmacy school.

Spring Week 6 Meeting

Hey Bruins!

Thank you to everyone who came out last week to our weekly meeting! Everyone had great questions for Dr. Andrew Charles. If you guys have any other questions for him you can reach him at acharles@ucla.edu.

As for this week, we will be having Dr. Jason Lee from the UCLA anesthesiology department (https://www.uclahealth.org/jason-s-lee). Similiar to last week he will mostly be talking about his specialty and medicine in general. Everyone will have the opportunity to ask questions again!! Spring Week 5 Meeting

Hello Bruins!

Hope everyone had a great week 4!

This week, we will have Dr. Andrew Charles (https://www.uclahealth.org/andrew-charles) from UCLA Neurology & Pain Medicine. He will be talking about his specialty and about medicine in general. In addition, everyone will have the opportunity to ask him any questions that you may have about medicine. Please come out and take advantage of this great opportunity!

Also, PPA will begin to implement an active member policy. In order to receive emails about research/volunteering opportunities, doctors’ emails, etc., you must attend AT LEAST 3 meetings per quarter. We do receive many opportunities for pre-med students and you should all take advantage of that by coming to the weekly meetings! 🙂

Lastly, this week we have an opportunity to get feedback on your essays for medical school by medical students! For the months of April-September, you can have your personal statement and secondary essays reviewed by a UCLA medical student! It’s first-come, first-served, and multiple submissions are fine. Spring Week 3 Meeting: Learning About the MCAT

Hi Bruins! Thank you for coming to our meeting last week on choosing which medical schools to apply and how to prepare for them. This coming Thursday (4/19/2018), we will have Simon from Kaplan talk about the MCAT for those of you who are planning on taking it. He will go over what is on each of the sections and some strategies on studying and taking it. We understand how daunting it is to study for this 7-hour exam, but ALL of us have the potential to do it!! Please note the room change to Ackerman 2412 this quarter but at the same time 5:00 – 6:00 pm.

PPA Spring 2018 Week 2 Meeting

Hi bruins! Thank you for coming to our first meeting last week on how to prepare for med school in college. This coming Thursday (4/12/2018), we will continue with the process of applying to med school.
