Week 6 meeting ppt

Pre-Med & Advocacy Talk @ UCLA

Week 5 General Meeting

Hey Bruins !!

Hope everyone has been hanging there! Thankfully we have a 3-day weekend coming up to catch up on sleep and de-stress from busy school work.

Before we going out and relaxing, we are lucky to have Amy Bugwadia to speak about Engaging in Pre-med Students and Healthcare Nonprofits/Advocacy. We will be learning how we, as future clinicians, can benefit from participating in these organizations. Here is an outline that Amy will be introducing:

  • Pre-med students and healthcare nonprofits/advocacy – the benefits of engaging in these organizations (why it’s a win-win for future clinicians & patients)
  • What is advocacy and what does it look like as a non-patient and future clinician, especially in this political climate?
  • Crohn’s and Colitis (Inflammatory Bowel Disease, or IBD) – what it is and Amy’s involvement (a “case study” about what advocacy looks like)
  • Psychosocial issues – how having a chronic invisible illness can affect patients, their caregivers, & clinicians and what we can do to combat this

The meeting will be THIS THURSDAY, 11/9 from 4-4:50pm in the ACKERMAN 2408. Hope to see you all there!

Week 4 Announcement

We hope that your quarter has been going great! For the people who submitted their Mentorship Program application, we will inform you by this Saturday (10/28/2017) about the decisions.
Our next general meeting will be this upcoming Thursday (10/26/2017) in Ackerman 2408. Although we initially were planning to talk further about research, we recently heard about the MiOra Virtual Shadowing Program. We think that this will be a helpful opportunity to many of you, and we’re excited to invite Dr. Ozlem Equils to talk more about the program.
Good luck on your midterms, and we hope to see all of you soon!
Best regards,
PPA Officers 2017 – 2018

Week 2 Announcement

Hey Bruins!

Thanks for coming to our first general meeting last week! In that meeting, we mostly introduced our organization and talked about the types of volunteering opportunities available.
Our next general meeting of the quarter will be this upcoming Thursday (10/12/2017) in Ackerman 2408, from 4:00 pm to 4:50 pm. This meeting, we will present about specific volunteering opportunities available. Even if you did not come to our first meeting, you are welcome to join us!
In addition, if you did not receive our email about the application for the mentor, mentee, and secretary positions, here are the information for those:
As mentioned in our week 1 meeting, PPA is now recruiting mentors and mentees for our new Mentorship Program! In this program, we will pair up people based on their needs and experiences. For example, if a mentee is looking for a research position, we will do our best to pair him/her with a mentor with some research experience.

Here is the mentor application:

You need to be in your 2nd year or higher to be a mentor. Keep in mind that you are expected to keep contact with your mentee throughout the year. In addition, there occasionally will be mandatory meet-ups where you have to help with a specific subject, such as class planning.

Here is the mentee application:

Although PPA would like to accept everyone applying to be a mentee, we may have limited spots if not enough mentors sign up. For both the mentor and mentee application, the deadline is 10/20/2017, 11:59 pm!

In addition, we also mentioned that we are looking for a new secretary for this academic year. The secretary is expected to:

1) Send weekly emails to PPA members, informing them about events such as general meetings
2) Update and manage the PPA Facebook group
3) Take electronic notes during staff meetings
4) Update and manage the emailing list
5) Take pictures of PPA events

Here is the application for the Secretary position:

For this, the deadline is 10/14/2017, 11:59 pmKeep in mind that this is sooner than the Mentorship Program deadline!
We hope to see you during our second meeting!
Best regards,
PPA Officers 2017 – 2018

FALL 2017- Week 1 General Meeting

Hello everyone!

It was great meeting some of you during UCLA’s Enormous Activities Fair! We hope you are enjoying your first week back to school!

Our first general meeting of the quarter will be this upcoming Thursday (10/5/2017) in Ackerman 2408, from 4:00 pm to 4:50 pm. This meeting, we will introduce ourselves and will give a presentation about volunteering.

For those of you who want to know more about our organization, the Pre-Medical Peer Association is a free and non-exclusive student organization dedicated to guiding pre-health undergraduates throughout their years at UCLA by offering free educational and career resources. All members receive full access to a wealth of educational benefits such as student and faculty mentorship, MCAT prep course discounts, giveaways, and opportunities for internships, volunteer, leadership, research, and clinical experience. Our club’s mission is to unify pre-medical students by promoting a forum for discussion. We present a diverse spectrum of knowledge for pre-med/pre-health students by inviting experienced guest speakers who provide extensive preparatory tools for the medical school interview and application process.

We invite guest speakers such as physicians to share their medical journeys, people from school admissions to introduce their medical schools to us, and people from MCAT prep places such as kaplan to provide us with MCAT prep courses discounts. We will provide members with resources and helpful tools to help them manage pre-medical life here at UCLA! This quarter, the main topic will be how to get started with essential things such as research, volunteering, and shadowing.

We hope to see you all there at our first meeting!

Best regards,

PPA Officers 2017 – 2018

[Spring 2017 Week 9] UCLA Radiology Resident Shota Yamamoto

Hello everyone!

Although finals are approaching and medical school applications can be submitted soon, we hope that your schedule hasn’t been too hectic. We have a meeting this upcoming Thursday (6/1/2017)4:00 pm to 4:50 pm at Ackerman Union Room 2408. This will most likely be our last meeting for this year, and we would like to see all of you one last time!

Some of you might remember our very first general meeting of the year (9/29/2016), where UCLA Resident Shota Yamamoto talked about his experiences in the medical field. We are excited to have him also as the speaker for our last meeting tomorrow! Shota will conclude on the points he made during his first visit, while answering questions about his life as a medical student/resident.

Even if you weren’t here for our first meeting, we highly encourage you to come to learn both the struggles and rewards of pursuing medicine.

Thank you for a great school year,
PPA Officers 2016 – 2017
