PPA Week 4 Meeting Announcement

Hi Bruins,

Happy Week 4!

Thank you all for coming to last week meeting with Simon from Kaplan. We will be continuing our discussion in regards to standardized testing this week. This week, we will focus on providing more details about the MCAT, providing more details on its content, structure, and showing you example of the types of questions that come up on this exam. We will most importantly be also talking about which classes at UCLA should be taken before taking the MCAT, and revealing which classes are most useful when tackling this big exam before applying to medical school! Let us know if you have any specific questions about the MCAT!!!

See you this Thursday at 5pm in Ackerman 2408!

In addition, this is the link to the Kaplan Prep for the Win events this weekend. We hope it’s beneficial for members (either by just taking an MCAT practice test or seeing what a Kaplan class looks like). If you want to attend the event, you just need to register with this link below. If you are busy, you can even just register for a free study guide.

These are the events:

1/30 @ 8:00 PM MCAT Lesson: Molecular Genetics

PPA Week 3 Meeting

Hi Bruins,

Happy Week 3!

Thank you all for coming to last week meeting with Dr. Kerbel. Hope it was an insightful experience and there are more doctors coming in for the rest of the quarter!! Here is Dr. Kerbel’s email address: rkerbel@mednet.ucla.edu. He gave me this email address last meeting, and said that members can feel free to contact him for any further questions, etc.

For those of you who applied for PPA Mentorship program, the decisions will be out by 2/26/2018. Stay tuned!

Last thing but not least, we have a meeting at 5pm this Thursday in Ackerman 2408. Simon, Kaplan representative, will be giving us an overview of the following exams and application processes: MCAT, PCAT, DAT, OAT, and GRE. This is a great and helpful meeting for any pre-health student who is not 100% sure whether to go to medical school or not. This will give an overview of these other examinations, and give insight on the differences between them all.

See you there!

PPA Mentorship Program and Week 2 Meeting

Hope everyone has enjoyed their long weekend so far. We would like you to know that the mentorship program is re-opened for those who are still interested. To clarify, if you already have a mentor/mentee, you DO NOT need to fill out the application again. We are looking especially for new mentors. If you know anyone that is interested in a mentorship/volunteer position, we would really appreciate it if you could mention this program to them. Deadline is 1/21/2018, 11:59 PM for both applications!!!

In this program, we will pair up people based on their needs and experiences. For example, if a mentee is looking for a research position, we will do our best to pair him/her with a mentor with some research experience.

You need to be in your 2nd year or higher to be a mentor. Keep in mind that you are expected to keep contact with your mentee throughout the year. In addition, there occasionally will be mandatory meet-ups where you have to help with a specific subject, such as class planning.

Although PPA would like to accept everyone applying to be a mentee, we may have limited spots if not enough mentors sign up.

Mentor application is here: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScJag7fuuP5GngFn1j2GA6z5qp6acEuLRtV-tL4ooSxCkSs8A/viewform?usp=sf_link.

Week 2 Meeting Announcement!

We would like to welcome you to this week’s meeting featuring Dr. Russell Kerbel who specializes in internal medicine and hospitalist. He works at both the UCLA medical centers works at both the UCLA medical centers in Westwood and Santa Monica. He will be with us and will share insight in regards to what the speciality of being a hospitalist entitles. He will also share with us his medical school journey/ experience, and answer any questions we may have.

Hospital medicine is a type of practice within internal medicine in which the clinical focus is caring for hospitalized patients. It would be a good idea to do some research beforehand so that you are prepared to ask Dr. Kerbel more in-depth questions!!!

Again, all meetings for this quarter will be at 5-6pm in Ackerman 2408! See you there 🙂

Tonight’s speaker event is postponed!

“Dear MiOra Participants,
I’m sorry to have to cancel my scheduled visit with you tonight. I have been advised by Pfizer’s Corporate Safety experts to postpone travel to the campus due to the tragic fires in the Los Angeles region. I hope all of you are safe and secure.
I will be returning to LA several times in early 2018 and will soon arrange an alternate date to be with you.
Thanks so much for your interest in my visit. I have received your questions and looking forward to answering them face to face, and also to hearing your thoughts and ideas about improving access to healthcare.
All the best,
Freda Lewis-Hall, MD
Chief Medical Officer
Pfizer Inc.”
